Question

Two pipes running together can fill a cistern in 3113 minutes. If one pipe takes 3 minutes more than the other to fill it, find the time in which each pipe would fill cistern.

Open in App
Solution

Let the time taken by the faster pipe to fill the cistern is x minutes, then the time taken the slower pipe will be (x+3) minutes.

The portion of cistern filled by the faster pipe in 1 minute is 1x.

The portion of cistern filled by the faster pipe in 4013 minutes is 4013x.

The portion of cistern filled by the slower pipe in 4013 minutes is 4013(x+3).

As the cistern is filled fully in 4013 minutes, then,

4013x+4013(x+3)=1

1x+1(x+3)=1340

40(2x+3)=13(x+3)

13x241x120=0

13x265x+24x120=0

(x5)(13x+24)=0

x=5,x=2413

x can not be a negative

Therefore, the faster pipe will fill the cistern in 5 minutes and the slower pipe will fill the cistern in 5+3=8 minutes.
