Question

Two radioactive nuclei A and B decay into C with decay constant λ and 2λ respectively. Initially, both A and B have the same number of nuclei N0. The rate of production of C after time τλ is αλN0, where τ is the half life of A. Find α.

Solution

We have the decay process happening for AC and BC

By law of radioactivity,
NA=N0eλt
NB=N0e2λt

Rate of production of C,
dNCdt=dNAdtdNBdt
=λ×N0eλt+2λ×N0e2λt
=λNA(t)+2λNB(t)

At t=τλ; where τ=ln2λ
NA=N0eln2=N02;
NB=N0eln4=N04

dNCdt=λNA(t)+2λNB(t)
=λN02+2λN04
=λN0
Hence, α=1
