Under which Article, due to lack of consensus among the constitutional authorities in Uttar Pradesh, the Supreme Court invoked its extraordinary powers to assume authority to appoint the State’s Lokayukta?
Article 142
In a rare display of flexing its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to enforce its own orders in order to do “complete justice”, the Supreme Court for the first time in its history appointed a Lokayukta after slamming the “failure” of the constitutional authorities of the State to comply with its orders.
Article 142 is one such provision in our Constitution which empowers the Supreme Court to pass such "decree or order as may be necessary for doing complete justice between the parties". Thus Article 142 supplements the powers already conferred upon the Supreme Court under the Constitution to guarantee that justice is done and in doing so the Court is not restrained by lack of jurisdiction or authority of law.4
