In winnowing, a current of air or wind is used to remove the husk from the grains. The husk is lighter and the grain is heavier so the husk is pushed in the same direction of the wind, whereas the grains fall directly to the ground. At the end of the process you get two heaps, one heap is made of grains and the other made of husk which was blown by the wind.

This process is also used to remove weevils or other pests from the stored grains.
