What is the role of the secretions from alpha and beta cells of the islets of Langerhans? Name the secretions.

αα cells secrete the hormone glucagon. Its major function is to raise blood sugar level by utilizing glycogen. On the other hand, β cells secrete the hormone insulin. Its main function is the utilization of glucose in tissues and facilitates the storage of glucose as glycogen in muscles and liver. Glucagon is mostly released when there is low secretion of insulin. The presence of glucose in blood thus secretes insulin.
