Solution

Cry protein is a toxic crystal protein encoded by cry gene which is toxic to certain insects. It is produced by Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria in an inactive form. Activation of cry protein takes when ingested by insects, due to the alkaline ph of guts. Epithelial cells of the gut are lysed which leads to the death of insects. Humans are taking advantage by incorporating BT toxin gene in crops to form transgenic crops which are insect resistant e.g., BT cotton.
