The 2004 fire in a school in Kumbakonam a city in Tamil Nadu, sparked off debates on the safety of schools in the country. This incident is really tragic as around 30,000 lives are lost every year due to fire accidents.

Some of the common reasons for fire accidents include faulty wiring, discarded cigarettes left on flammable materials, and smoke detectors that fail to activate.

The fuel must be heated to its ignition temperature for anycombustion to occur. The reaction will keep going as long as there is enough heat, fuel and oxygen. This is known as the fire triangle. By cutting the supply of even one, we can control fire.

A major concern for anyone involved in a fire accident is the damage that smoke inhalation can cause to the lungs. When smoke inhalation injuries are combined with external burns, the chance of death increases significantly.
