Question

What are longitudinal and stationary waves?

Open in App
Solution

Stationary waves

  1. The combination of two waves with the same amplitude and frequency but moving in opposite directions is known as a stationary wave. It also goes by the name of standing Waves.
  2. Waves that are traveling are created when two waves moving in the same direction interact. An oscillating Wave that is fixed in space is created when two waves move in the opposite directions and interfere with one another.

Longitudinal waves

  1. A wave is made up of vibrations or other periodic disturbances that move in the same direction as the wave's forward motion. The coiled spring undergoes a wave of compression that travels throughout its length and is followed by stretching when one end of the spring is compressed and released.
  2. When sound travels through air, the gas is compressed in the direction of the sound waves while they oscillate back and forth.
