Question

What are some biosafety issues concerned with genetically modified crops?

Open in App
Solution

The transformed gene adversely affect the host. The gene may be harmful or toxic to the plant. The gene may result in the development of cancer, or other deadly disease or the death of the plant. If the recombinant food product is a crop, there may be harmful effects with the gene present in the crop to the person eating the crop. There may be antibiotic resistant genes as a marker, which might suppress the effect of antibiotic when the person is infected with some disease if the antibiotic is taken with the food. There may be allergic reactions with the products which are associated with these products. The transgenic crop may be mixed with a normal crop.
