Solution
Algae:
Alga is a term that describes a large and incredibly diverse group of eukaryotic, photosynthetic lifeforms.
Algae reproduce in one of three ways: vegetative reproduction, asexual reproduction, or sexual reproduction.
Fragmentation is used in vegetative reproduction, with each piece developing into a thallus.
The creation of spores, known as zoospores, is used for asexual reproduction.
Flagella on these zoospores allow them to move around.
They produce new plants after germination.
There are 3 classes of algae:
Chlorophyceae, Rhodophyceae
,
Phaeophyceae
Chlorophyceae:
As chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b pigments are present, they are known as green algae
. Chlamydomonas, Spirogyra, and Chara
are other examples.
Chlorella
generates food that is high in proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals, which is important for the economy.
Rhodophyceae:
Because of the presence of the red pigment r-phycoerythrin, they are known as red algae.
Porphyra, Gracilaria
, and
Gelidium
are other examples.
Red algae are devoured by a variety of creatures, including crabs, fish, worms, and even humans, and are an essential element of the ecosystem.
Agar, which is used as a food additive, is also made from red algae.
Calcium-rich, they're also employed in vitamin supplements.
Phaeophyceae
Brown algae is another name for them, and they're typically found in the water.
Chlorophyll a, c, carotenoids, and xanthophyll are examples of these pigments.
Examples include
Dictyota, Laminaria, and Sargassum
.
Algae are important because they have the ability to fix carbon.
They are important primary producers in the aquatic food chain.
A wide variety of organisms may be found in kelp forests. Seaweeds such as
Laminaria, Sargassum
, and other edible seaweeds are plentiful.
