Solution

Modern periodic table:

  • The modern periodic table was comprised of groups and periods.
  • The groups are the vertical columns while the periods are the horizontal rows.
  • The elements were arranged in an order of increasing atomic number (Z).

Demerits of the modern periodic table:

  • The position of Hydrogen was not given by the modern periodic table as it resembles the properties of both alkali metals as well as halogens.
  • Lanthanides and actinides have been placed at the bottom of the periodic table rather than in the main body.
  • Elements that were showing similar properties such as Barium and Lead are separated.
  • No separate classification for metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
