Question

What are the different states of matter? Name the factors which determine the state of matter. Explain

Open in App
Solution

Matter exists in three states :
Solid, Liquid and gas

The State of matter is determined by two factors :
1. Temperature
2. Pressure

These two factors are respectively control
(1) The kinetic energy of the particles
(2) The distance between the particles thereby, the intermolecular force of attraction.

If intermolecular forces are the very large and kinetic energy of the particles is much less, the matter will be in the solid-state.

If intermolecular forces are very weak and kinetic energy of the particles is very large that can overcome the forces of intermolecular attraction and set them free to roam about , the matters will be in gaseous state.
