Polymerization:

• When monomeric units react together in a chemical reaction to form a polymeric chain, this process is known as Polymerization.
• Example: Ethylene polymerizes to form polyethylene.

Methods of polymerization:

There are mainly two methods of polymerization which are classified as:

• Addition polymerization
• Condensation polymerization

Addition polymerization:

• The process in which the same monomer is added to the chain having double/triple bonds to form a polymer is known as Addition polymerization.
• An example of Addition polymerization is the formation of polyethylene.

Condensation polymerization:

• In this method, polymerization takes place between two different bi/tri-functional monomeric units.
• An example of polymer formed by condensation polymerization is $\mathrm{Nylon}6,6$.
