Question

What are the three ways to measure the concentration of a solution?

Open in App
Solution

Concentration (C): It is the ratio of mass of the solute (m) which is dissolved in the solution and volume (V) of the solution.

C=m/V

The three ways to measure the concentration of a solution are molarity, mole fraction, and molality.

  1. Molarity (M): It is calculated by the number of moles (n) of solute and volume of solution (V). M=n/V
  2. Mole fraction (x): It is the ratio of number of moles of particular element (ni) and total number of moles of substance (ntotal). x=ni/ntotal
  3. Molality (m):It is measured by the number of moles (n) of a solute in terms of mass of the solvent (kg). m=nofsolute/kgofsolvent
