Question

What happens when carbon dioxide is passed through lime water give equation also also also explain by giving the chemical equation as to what would happen if excess of carbon dioxide is passed

Open in App
Solution

Lime water is solution of Calcium Hydroxide almost as clear as water When Carbon di oxide gas is passed through it it turns milky because in this chemical reaction Calcium Carbondate is Formed which is insoluble in water So these insoluble particles are spread throughout the solution These particles being white in colour the solution appears to be milky The chemical reaction takes place as follows … …………………Ca(OH) 2 +CO2————-CaCO3 +H2O

When excess CO2 is added, it reacts with calcium carbonate( CaCO3) and water (H2O) to form calcium bicarbonate Ca(HCO3)2 and since it is soluble in water, it dissolves in it making the solution clear again. The chemical reaction is as follows:
CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O ---------> Ca(HCO3)2
