What is a suspension? What are the properties of suspension

Open in App
Solution

Suspension can also be defined as a heterogenous mixture in which solute like particles are visible in the solvent like phase. It is seen generally after some time of being introduced and can be removed by sedimentation. After more time, we can the solid particles settling down. The size of solid particles that separate out is larger than 1 micrometer.

When solid particles or liquid droplets are found in air they are termed as particulate or aerosol. Thus, suspension is not limited to liquid phase only.

Properties of suspension are as follows:

  • Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture.
  • The particles of a suspension can be seen by the naked eye.
  • The size of suspended particles is more than 1000nm.
  • The particles of a suspension scatter a beam of light passing through it and make its path visible.
  • The solute particles settle down when a suspension is left undisturbed, that is, a suspension is unstable. They can be separated from the mixture by the process of filtration.
