What is meant by the terms 'solute' and 'solvent'? Explain with examples.

Solution

A solution is obtained when one substance is dissolved in another substance. The substance which is dissolved to obtain a solution is called solute whereas the substance in which the solute is dissolved is called solvent.

For example, sugar is dissolved in water to obtain sugar solution. Here sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.
