What is pedon? Describe the different layers of soil or soil profile.

Pedon- It is a small area where you can study soil.

Different layers of the soil are- O horizon, A - horizon, B- horizon, and C- horizon

O- horizon-

  1. This layer is present only in the forest area.
  2. It is also called topsoil because it consists of organic material like grasses, dead leaves, small rocks, surface organisms, fallen trees.
  3. The color of this horizon is dark brown color.

A- horizon-

  1. This layer include humus.
  2. humus contains organic material and decomposed material.
  3. In this layer the seed germination occur.
  4. Microorganisms like earthworms can be found here.

B-horizon-

  1. This layer is little hard situated below the top soil and above the bedrock.
  2. It does not contain enough humus.
  3. It is a layer of deposition of mineral and metal salts example iron oxide.
  4. The water holding capacity is high of this layer.
  5. Color of this layer is light yellow and there is some clay soil is also present.

C- horizon-

  1. There is no organic material found here.
  2. It is made up of broken bedrock.
