Question

What is the best metal for electrolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Electrolysis:

  • Electrolysis is the decomposition of an electrolyte when an electric current is passed through its aqueous solution or fused state.
  • Electrolysis of an electrolyte is governed by Faraday's law of electrolysis.

The best metal for electrolysis is:

  • Any metal is used for the cathode but the metals which are readily corroding are used for the anode because of their oxidizing nature.
  • Iron and Steel are most commonly used for the electrolysis of water.
  • They are used as anodes, but they are sacrificed during electrolysis, as the anodes rust (get oxidized) and the cathodes de-rust (get reduced).
