Question

What is the difference between overloading and short circuit in domestic electri circuit?

Open in App
Solution

Short Circuit occurs when neutral wire and live wire touch accidentally providing a very low resistance path for current. ... Overloading of thecircuit occurs when large number of appliances are connected in a single socket. This causes a large amount of current to flow and the fuse may blow off.

In detail : Both cases include the excess flow of current. But short circuit is an accidental case where phase wire and neutral wire come in contact and since there is no loead or any resistance is in effect, a very high current flows.
In the case of overload a large number of appliances are connected to a single sourse so that all these appliances drain a lot of current from the single source. This will result in excess flow of current.
