Open in App
Solution

Acyl chloride:

  • When an acyl group R-CO- Is attached to a halogen (here chloride) it is known as acyl chloride

Rosenmund reduction reaction:

  • The hydrogenation of an acyl chloride catalyzed by palladium on barium sulfate to give an aldehyde is known as Rosenmund reaction

For example, Benzoyl chloride in presence of palladium on barium sulfate undergoes hydrogenation to give Benzaldehyde and hydrogen chloride

Thus, the end product of the Rosenmund reduction reaction of an acyl chloride is an aldehyde.
