Question

What is the function of the pollen tube ? Explain it with the help of a diagram.

Open in App
Solution

The pollen tube of most seed plants acts as a conduit to transport sperm cells from the pollen grain, either from the stigma (in flowering plants or angiosperms) to the ovules at the base of the pistil, or directly through ovule tissue in some gymnosperms (conifers and gnetophytes- xylem vessels are present in them).

The pollen tube transfers the pollen grain (male part) which has fallen on the stigma to the ovule (female part) inside the ovary through the style resulting in fertilization after the pollen fuses with the ovule
