Question

What is the hybridisation of carbon atom in diamond and graphite? How many kg of carbon are present in 0.5 mole of Buckminster fullerene? (Atomic mass of carbon =12)

Open in App
Solution

Hybridization of carbon in diamond is sp3
Hybridization of carbon in graphite is sp2
1 mole of C60 fullerene contains 60 moles of carbon
0.1 mole of C60 fullerene contains 60 moles of carbon
Weight of C atoms= Number of moles of carbon × atomic mass of carbon
=6×12
=72gm=0.072kg
0.1 mole of Buckminster fullerene contains 0.072kg of carbon.
