What is the hybridization on carbon (2)?
sp2
As we know that we can directly find out the hybridization state by using the formula:
Number of hybrid orbitals = Number of bonded atoms + Number of lone pairs
So, we can see that carbon is bonded to 3 other carbons. So, number of bonded atoms = 3
And we know that there are no lone pairs on the atom. So, number of lone pairs = 0
Therefore, Number of hybrid orbitals = 3
This means the carbon is sp2 hybridised.
