Question

What is the use of hydrogen peroxide in electrolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen peroxide was produced by direct current electrolysis of aqueous solutions of sulfuric acid (or of potassium bisulfate or ammonium bisulfate):
H2SO4 <=> HSO4- + H+

On cathode:
2H+ + 2e' --> H2

On anode:
2HSO4- -2e' ----> H2S2O8

2H2SO4 --> H2S2O8 + 2H+ + 2e'
H2S2O8 + 2H2O --> 2H2SO4 + H2O2
