  • It is the combining capacity of an atom. The number of bonds that an atom can form as part of a compound is expressed by the valency of the element.

Nitride:

  • A nitride is a nitrogen based compound with a formal oxidation state of -3. Nitrides are a diverse group of compounds with several characteristics and applications.

Examples:

  • Ionic nitrides are Lithium nitride Li3N and all the alkaline earth metals can form nitrides with the general formula M3N2, where M is the alkaline earth metal.

Valency of Nitride:

  • The valency of nitride is the same as its formal charge. Hence, valency of nitride is 3.
