What makes a glass different from a solid such as quartz ? Under what condition could quartz be converted into glass ?
Glass is an amorphous solid in which the constituent particles (SiO4 tetrahedra) have only a short range order. Quartz is a crystalline form of silica in which SiO4 units are arranged in such a way that they have long ranged order. Quartz can be converted into glass by melting it and cooling it rapidly.
