The newspapers during the colonial times inspired the public to eliminate the social evils and helped in uniting them against the foreign power reigning on them.

The following newspapers were instrumental in uniting the people of India:

Darpan: The first Marathi newspaper, Darpan, was started by Balshastri Jambhekar, in 1832. Some of the headlines of Darpan which tell us about the social, political, and cultural conditions in those times are:
  • The Accounts of Expenditure from the Three Administrative Divisions of the East India Company.Appointment of a Committee for Cleanliness of the City
  • Remarriage of Hindu Widows.
  • Achievements of Raja Ram Mohan Roy in England.
Kesari and Maratha: The newspapers Kesari and Maratha focussed on social and political issues prevalent in the pre-independence era. Maratha was founded by Gopal Ganesh Agarakar, and Kesari, by Bal Gangadhar Tilak.The articles in Kesari revolved around India’s condition, books written in local languages, and the political events taking place in Britain.
