Question

what will happen if the gas molecules undego an in elastic collision? why dontinelastic collisions occur if we take gases in a container

Solution

Dear Student,

According to the Kinetic Theory of Gases it is assumed that the gas molecules undergo elastic collision. Elastic collisions are collisions in which kinetic energy of the molecule is conserved. This means there is no loss in energy if the molecules undergo elastic collision and so they will constantly be in motion. However, if molecules undergo inelastic collision with the wall of the container, then they will lose energy each time they strike the wall and will eventually collapse.
