speed of the boat still in water=18km/hr
speed of boat in upstream=(18-x) km/hr
speed in downstream=18+x km/hr
distance between places is 24km
time to travel in upstream=d/(18-x)hr
time to travel in downstream=d/(18+x)hr
difference in time=1hr
(24/(18-x))-(24/(18+x))=1
24(1/(18-x))-(1/(18+x))=1
solving
2x/(324-xsquare)=1/24
324-xsqure=48x
solving quadractic equation
(x+54)(x-6)=0
x=6 x=-56
x=6 is the answer
