Solution

Sodium (Na) and potassium (K) react with cold water to from basic salt NaOH and KOH respectively. The molecular mass of NaOH is 40. So, X is Na and Y is NaOH. The gas liberated during the reaction is hydrogen (H2). So Z is H2.
