Question

when A piece of ice at zero degree centigrade Falls from a height, 1/60 th part of it melts. Assuming only one fifth part of stored energy is converted to heat calculate the height

Solution

Dear student,
Find the answer to your query as under:

considering latent heat of fusion to be = L = 333.55 kJ/kg = 333550 J/ kg
The mass of the ice that gets converted to water = m/60

now,

the energy needed for the ice to melt = mass × latent heat of fusion = (m/60) × 333550 J ---- (1)
now,

the potential energy stored in the ice when it falls from the height 'h' = mgh

now,
only 1/5 th of it gets converted to heat.

Thus, total heat energy available = 1/5 mgh ----- (2)

for the conversion of ice to water to take place eq (1) = eq (2)

or,
taking g = 10 m/s2
1/5 mgh = m/ 60 × 333550
h = 277.95 m
