The first summit of the non-aligned countries took place in Belgrade, Serbia in 1961. It was attended by the founding leaders of India, Indonesia, Egypt, Ghana and Yugoslavia with 21 non-aligned countries.The movement played an important role in giving the Third World countries a medium to stay neutral from then power blocs USA and USSR.
