In over 60% of angiosperms, pollen grains are shed at the 2-cell stage (vegetative cell and generative cell), In the remaining species, the generative cell divides mitotically to give rise to the two male gametes before pollen grains are shed at the 3-celled stage and give 1 vegetative cell and two male gametes.

For example at the time of shedding wheat pollen consist of one vegetative and two male gametes ( 3 celled)
