Hypertonic is the Greek word 'hyper" meaning over and 'tonos' meaning stretching. When the concentration of solutes is greater outside the cells than inside the cells, the solution outside the cells is said to be hypertonic. Inside the cell has lower osmotic pressure compared to the outside solute concentration. As a result of this, turgor pressure becomes low and causes plasmolysis (i.e, water moves out) and cell shrinkens.
