Question

When we apply a force parallel to the door, it does not rotate about the hinge. Justify this statement.

Solution

When we apply a force parallel to the door, it does not rotate about the hinge. This is so because when the force is parallel to the axis, its moment about the axis is zero and hence it does not produce any turning effect.
