The upper surface of tongue has projections, called papillae. There are four types of papillae:
  • Circumvallate- They are the largest papillae present at the back of the tongue.
  • Fungiform- They are most numerous near the tip of the tongue and are round.
  • Filiform- They are conical and found near the centre and most of the upper surface of the tongue.
  • Foliate- They are situated at the sides of the base of the tongue.
Taste buds are present on all of these except filiform papillae.
