Chlorofluorocarbons$\left(CFCs\right)$ and other halogenated ozone depleting substances $\left(ODS\right)$ are mainly responsible for man-made chemical ozone depletion. When a $CFC$ molecule breaks down, it releases atomic chlorine. One chlorine atom can destroy over 100,000 ozone molecules. The net effect is to destroy ozone faster than it is naturally created.
