  1. The Magnesium and Calcium salts present in water make water harder in nature.
  2. The softening of water is a process that is used to remove the impurities such as Magnesium and Calcium salts.
  3. When soap is mixed with this hard water then it makes an insoluble gelatinous curd-like substance, which creates wastage of the soap.
  4. There are mainly two methods involved in removing the hardness of water: temporary hardness and permanent hardness.
  5. Temporary hardness can be removed through boiling process.
  6. Permanent hardness can be removed by Calgon's method and washing soda method.
  7. The chemical used in softening of hard water is Sodium carbonateNa2CO3, Slaked limeCa(OH)2, Sodium chlorideNaCl.
  8. The chemical which is used for small-scale softening are: AmmoniaNH3, Borax, Calcium HydroxideCa(OH)2, etc.
