Question

Which is dominant: gametophyte or sporophyte?

Open in App
Solution

Gametophyte:

  1. Both "gameto" and "phytate" relate to gametes and plants respectively.
  2. During plant formation, gametophytes produce gametes.
  3. Plants generate gametes with the assistance of their sex organs.
  4. Every plant, such as algae, gymnosperms, angiosperms, bryophytes, and others, goes through this.
  5. For instance, within the bodies of algae are basic, non-motile gametes.

Sporophyte:

  1. While "phytate" refers to plants, "sporo" refers to spores.
  2. Gymnosperms, angiosperms, bryophytes, and algae all generate spores.
  3. They are the spore-producing plant generation.

In bryophytes, the gametophyte phase is dominant, whereas, in pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, the sporophyte phase is dominant.
