Question

Which is not a colligative property?

Open in App
Solution

Colligative property:

  1. The properties depend on the number of solvent particles concerning their nature relative to the number of solute particles present in a solution.
  2. These properties are independent of their chemical identity.
  3. It is used to determine the molar mass of the solutes.
  4. Colligative properties include the lowering of vapor pressure, raising the boiling point, lowering freezing point, osmosis, and osmotic pressure, reverse osmosis, and water filtration.

Non-colligative property:

  1. The composition and property of the solute and solvent are uniforms throughout is called non-colligative properties.
  2. There are three types of non-colligative properties present in the solution like concentration, solubility, and vapor pressure.
  3. Concentration: It is a composition of a solution that is expressed either qualitatively or quantitatively. For example, the dilute solution has a less amount of solute in the solution but the concentrated has a large amount of solute in the solution. There are several ways to calculate concentration like volume percentage, mass percentage, parts per million, mass by volume percentage, mole fraction, molality, and molarity.
  4. Solubility: The maximum amount of solute dissolved in the solvent at a particular temperature. It depends on the parameters like the nature of solute and solvent, temperature, and pressure. The solubility affects the two mixtures one is the solubility of solid in liquid and the other is the solubility of the gas in a liquid.
  5. Vapor pressure: The addition of solute and solvent to make a solution and this solution contains one or more volatile compounds. There are two ways to measure the vapor pressure which are vapor pressure of liquid-liquid solutions and vapor pressure of solid-liquid vapor pressure.
