Question

Which main product is obtained by microbial fermentation as ethanol?

Open in App
Solution

Fermentation:

  1. Fermentation is a biochemical process in which microscopic organisms convert carbohydrates to alcohol in an anaerobic condition.
  2. Ethanol fermentation is also known as alcoholic fermentation.
  3. Sugars like glucose, fructose, and sucrose are transformed into ethanol and carbon dioxide as by-products.

Steps in fermentation:

  1. In the first step, pyruvic acid form through glycolysis (produces a net of 2 ATP molecules).
  2. In the next step, pyruvate is then converted to lactic acid, ethanol, or other products.
  3. NAD+ is formed and re-used in the glycolysis process.
