Question

Which of the following algae exhibit all three forms of syngamy - isogamy, anisogamy and oogamy?
  1. Spirogyra
  2. Fucus
  3. Volvox
  4. Chlamydomonas

Solution

The correct option is D Chlamydomonas
Syngamy is also called fertilization. Chlamydomonas exhibits all three types of syngamy. It involves the fusion of two haploid gametes to form a diploid zygote. It is the most common mode of sexual reproduction.

Isogamy is the fusion of male and female gametes which are similar in size.
Anisogamy is the fusion of male and female gametes which are dissimilar in size. Here, either both the gametes are motile or both are non-motile.
Oogamy is the fusion of a large non-motile female gamete with a smaller motile male gamete.

Spirogyra exhibits only isogamy. Fucus and Volvox exhibit oogamy.
