Question

Which of the following is NOT matched correctly?

  1. Chlorophyll b – imparts red colour to flowers.

  2. Carotene- imparts yellowish orange colour to the plant parts.

  3. Xanthophyll- imparts yellowish colour to the plant parts.

  4. Chlorophyll a – imparts bluish green colour to the plant parts.

Solution

The correct option is A

Chlorophyll b – imparts red colour to flowers.

Pigments are the colour imparting agents which are responsible for giving colours to flowers and fruits in plants. Chlorophyll a imparts bluish green colour, chlorophyll b gives yellowish green, carotene gives yellowish orange and xanthophyll gives a yellow colour to the plants.

All these pigments can absorb light. However, only chlorophyll a participate directly in photosynthesis. All other pigments absorb light and transfer it to chlorophyll a. Hence, they are called accessory pigments.
