According to Chargaff’s rules, the total amount of purines (A+G) always equals the total amount of pyrimidines (T+C). Since adenine pairs with thymine, we could say that the amount of A equals the amount of T; likewise guanine always pairs with cytosine and hence, the amount of G equals the amount of C. However, A+T need not always be equal to G+C.
