Question

Which of the following motions can be treated as projectile motion?

  1. Hammer thrown vertically upwards on Earth

  2. Hammer thrown at with horizontal on Earth
  3. Feather thrown at with the horizontal on Moon
  4. Feather thrown at with the horizontal on Moon

Solution

The correct options are
C Feather thrown at with the horizontal on Moon
D Feather thrown at with the horizontal on Moon

A projectile is an object upon which the only force acting is gravity. There are a variety of examples of projectiles. An object dropped from rest is a projectile (provided that the influence of air resistance is negligible). An object that is thrown vertically upward is also a projectile and an object which is thrown upward at an angle to the horizontal is also a projectile. However, on Earth, in a realistic scenerio, there is also the effect of air, wind, hence, projectile motion is not possible.

So, the Moon doesn't have wind. So only force is force of gravity. Hence both c and d are true.
