Question

Which of the following option correctly differentiates between evaporation and boiling of water?

Your Answer
A
Evaporation takes place only at boiling point of water, i.e., 100C.
Correct Answer
B
Evaporation takes place at temperatures below the boiling point of water.
Your Answer
C
Evaporation takes place only above boiling point of water.
Your Answer
D
Both evaporation and boiling of water are same.

Solution

The correct option is B Evaporation takes place at temperatures below the boiling point of water.
During evaporation, a liquid gets converted into its vapour form at temperatures below its boiling point. For example, clothes dry when water present in them evaporates and this occurs below boiling point of water.
Whereas in boiling, liquid is converted to its vapour form at its boiling temperature. For example, water boils at 100oC. During boiling, bubbles are formed in the liquid whereas during evaporation, no bubbles are formed.
