The chemical process occurring in a battery produces the electrons in the negative terminal by a process called oxidation. These electrons move through the electric circuit and get absorbed in the positive terminal by a process called reduction.

In order to avoid direct movement of electrons inside the cell (from the negative terminal to the positive terminal), an electrolyte is used in between the terminals.
