Tollen's reagent can be used for the separation of from acetophenone. Tollen's reagent is basically a solution nitrate and ammonia. It is used to determine the presence of aldehyde, aromatic aldehydes and alpha hydroxy ketone functional groups.
It is used to distinguish between ketones and aldehydes.
Tollen's reagent gives negative test for most ketones except alpha hydroxy ketones. So, here acetaldehyde gives silver mirror in the test and acetophenone will not.
