On 23 March 1940, the Muslim League passed a resolution and demanded autonomy in Muslim-majority areas. But this resolution never mentioned the partition of India or the creation of Pakistan. In the later years though, it came to be known as the Pakistan Resolution. The League convinced Muslim masses regarding the benefits and need for a separate nation from 1940 to 1946. During 1942 to 1945, most of the Congress leaders were in jail and the League took advantage of this to mobilise the Muslim communities.
